Avanceon’s deployed system was critical in bringing drinkable water to over 375,000 people in Bishah and Tathlith in Asir province
The National Water Company (KSA) received distinction in the best project category at the Global Water Awards 2019 ceremony held in the British capital London by The World Water Information Organization.
This award-winning “Al Wajid Project”, is a part of national transformation program to achieve water security, meet the demand for water, and strengthen resources for the South Western part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The project is designed to supply 68,000 cubic meters of water in the preliminary stage while its total capacity would reach 108,000 cubic meters. It will take water from the aquifers of Rub Al-Khali, a vast desert located in the southeastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, treat it and pump it to the Asir region. Over 375,000 people will benefit from the influx of fresh water in the region.
Operations at the Central Al-Wajid Control Station are managed through water management and distribution SCADA system. This SCADA system has been developed, integrated, commissioned and maintained by Avanceon. SCADA system monitors all the stages of water treatment and operations. These stages include receiving impure water, purification and pumping through the transport lines to the supporting pumping stations to the Bishah Governorate reservoir, passing through the Tathlith governorate.
For effective downstream operations’ control and data/information flow, Avanceon has installed advanced Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) operating on a modern technology that is powered through solar energy. This is in line with overall project’s highlight where almost all the systems including SCADA system, control system and valves along the transmission network and pumping stations are entirely powered by the desert’s abundant sunlight, a vital achievement in the Kingdom as national energy plans shift decisively toward renewable energy sources and away from fossil fuels.
At a total cost of SAR 1.4 billion, the Al Wajid transmission line will transport water from terminals and main transport lines for the governorates of Bishah and Tathlith. The project will see pipeline lengths exceeding up to 355 kilometers, in addition to digging 28 wells in Al-Wajid.
Ali Al-Qassimi, spokesman for the Ministry of Water and Electricity said of the mega project:
“Geographical formations are one of the main sources of water. The ministry is trying to do the impossible in its bid to supply drinking water to the people of Asir region”
The ceremony was held in London, United Kingdom on Tuesday, April 09, 2019, at the Natural History Museum as part of the Global Water Summit 2019. To receive the award, Vice President of Commercial Affairs for the National Water Company Nemer Bin Mohammad Al-Shibly was present. The Distinction was presented by Mr. Christopher Gasson, Managing Director of the Global Water Intelligence.
